US: Jobless claims rise to 218,000

Dec 28 (Reuters) – Claims for unemployment benefits in the United States rose to 218,000 in the week ended Dec. 23, compared with 206,000 (revised) in the previous week, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Economists had expected 210,000 jobless filings on average.

Registrations for the week to December 16 were revised upwards from the original estimate of 205,000.

The four-week moving average stands at 212,000 compared to 212,250 (revised) in the previous week.

The number of people receiving regular compensation rose to 1.875 million in the week ending December 16 (the last week for which data is available), compared with 1.861 million (revised) the previous week. (Written by Augustin Turpin, Editing by Kate Entringer)
