This is the last session of this year, 2023. Last night, the main American indices finished slightly higher, at least the Dow Jones (+0.14%) and the S&P 500 (+0.04%). Positive enough momentum for Cac 40 to start this Friday with progress, even token.
Since the creation of the Cac 40, the index is calculated based on 1,000 as of December 31, 1987, over the past 35 years, it has resulted in a majority of the last session of the year increasing, 19 to 16, with an average modest gain of 0.13%.
+2.07% in 1999, -1.52% in 2022
The best performance came from 1999 with an increase of 2.07%, followed by 1991 (+1.37%) and 2002 (+1.28%). However, these past four years have resulted in declines, including that of 2022 (-1.52%, the largest decline in the history of the index in the last session, after -0.28%, -0.86% and -0.07% from 2021 to 2019).
The longest streak of increases on the last day of the year is seven, between 1997 and 2003 (including 1999, +2.07%), compared to 5 for the longest decline between 1992 and 1996 (-0.05%, -0.57 %) %, -0.69%, -0.38% and -0.13%).
