Cal-Maine egg producer buys Tyson chicken plant in Missouri

Egg producer Cal-Maine Foods said Friday it has agreed to buy a recently closed broiler processing, hatchery and feed plant in Dexter, Missouri, from Tyson Foods.

Tyson, America’s largest meat producer by revenue, said in August it would close four of its chicken plants in states including Missouri to cut costs amid slowing demand for its products.

About 683 people worked at the Tyson plant in Dexter, which has a population of about 8,000.

Cal-Maine said it plans to convert the broiler processing plant into an egg grading facility as a first step and plans to make additional investments and create new jobs.

The company, which expects to close the deal in the third fiscal quarter, did not disclose the value of the transaction.

Cal-Maine also said it plans to enter into agreements with some former Tysons contract farmers to convert their farms to support egg production. (Reporting by Grantha Vanaik in Bengaluru; Editing by Pooja Desai)
